Alphawave Philosophy

There has to a point to what we do and plan to do. If I/we are not going to make any difference to anything or add anything to the already rich cultural texture of Ambient and Minimalist Electronica then we had better stop right soon!

Having said that - not many musicians and artists know exactly where they ARE going. Perhaps that is why many feel insecure.

Fortunately I do feel I have something to add, and that I have really only just started - poor you! 'FirstFiveYears' of Alphawave notwithstanding!

When I started Alphawave the idea of Permanent Evolution Music really appealed. so part of the Alphawave journey is to embrace constant change. This will be borne out with more clarity during 2002. There are several new projects in the pipeline:

- New Alphawave Electronica
- Acoustic and guitar minimalism
- Music and sound for Spaces (
Spatial Electronica for exhibition and garden!)
- Sound and Image Textures

Music and Sound for Spaces is going to need some research but I already have an outline for what I intend and how it could develop in a very special way in 2002. There will also be some quite brave! risk taking music! Fun fun fun!

Core Alphawave Values
The core values and intentions of the Alphawave Project can best be summed up thus:

- To add to the richness of Ambient Sound
- To keep evolving new approaches
- To explore sound and melody, not forgetting of course, harmony
- To stay inspired and keep learning!
- To explore Music, Sound And Video together

Previously Alphawave has believed in unleashing the richness of sounds and not hiding them under a mere vehicle for words - in the way that a lot of songs are - almost a kind of 'folk' music for the western world.

Whilst we are not so anti-voice as we were and will use it as another instrument in compositions and for the provision of tunes - we do aim to keep it in its place!

Traditional 'classical' music aims to take the listener on a journey without always spelling it out in verses and choruses. This approach still has enormous potential and is the way a lot of Ambient and Electronica has been made since the 1950's.

Why Ambient and Electronica?
Ambient and Electronica by their nature attempt to define an approach to sound that is focused on texture and the sensual nature of harmonic sound!

One of my approaches to Ambient and Electronica at present is to try and explore the relationship between sound and environment. Environment in this sense means the location that you are currently experiencing or listening to the sound.

I am also interested in the stripped-down Minimalist approach to music - to try and give full value to sounds - either single tones or limited harmonic values of limited selections of tones(notes)! However notes are one thing - sounds are another thing entirely.

Cage and Eno, Reich and Glass and many others have experimented with minimalist sound, drones and exotic or pared down rythmns. In the 50's and 60's and 70's this experimentation has constantly heralded new options and futures in music. Much modern dance music and composition has roots very firmly laid by those ground-breaking composers and risk takers. I would like to take Alphawave along a similar path - the only limit should be my febrile imagination!

I will continue my exploration of sound and texture - not forgetting the power of a tune when necessary - I do love melody!

The journey continues...
